Water Whole

Metaphysics attempts to answer two questions, what is there? and what is it like? Amongst the first (that we know of) to ponder these questions was the Greek philosopher Thales. He believed according to Aristotle (for nothing that Thales wrote is extant) that water was the fundamental element and everything came from it and everything went back to it.

Aristotle quite rightly suggests that changing something into something else would at least have some evidence of what it changed from. In the Thalian sense it could be argued that we humans come from and go back to water. Without it we are not whole beings indeed all life depends upon it, as far as we know.

Which brings me to the words whole and hole we need water to be whole and water exists only in holes, be they a few microns deep in the cells of our bodies or several miles deep in the oceans. My video illustrates this need and longing for water and I add at the end a longing for the light that also sustains us.

I took the simplest images I could find of water close to my home. A puddle in a mat, pouring water on some polycarbonate sheeting, rain through a window and rain on some old stone slabs. My work is figurative and I am the figure; for this video I chose to wear a cover all body suit to appear as my character 'Everyman'.

The video is 2 minutes 17 seconds long in 16:9 format.
